Matt's Story

A musician with a heart for the homeless of New York City

For a long time now I have been wanting to tell the stories of New Yorks homeless people after a special encounter with a homeless person back in 1998.

After offering to buy a meal for a homeless person in a Burger King in the middle of winter, we got talking and I found out pretty quickly he used to be a famous musician. This blew me away that someone who once had such a prolific career could be on the streets of New York shovelling snow.

Over time my passion grew and I wanted to hear more stories of the homeless people of New York and so started this project which gives them the opportunity to not just to tell their stories but to say whatever they like, what they lack, what the city lacks to provide for them and what is keeping them on the streets - its an avenue for their voices to be heard.

Homeless people need a lot more than money as you will find out in the interviews. My hope is that enough people and the right people will hear directly from the homeless themselves, what change really needs to take place on the streets of New York.
